    Trump and Clinton are in a dead heat.

    5월23일 월요일 아침 NBC와 ABC 방송은 똑같이
    Dead Heat라는 큼직한 자막을 넣고 뉴스를 시작했다.
     ABC방송 기자는 Trump and Clinton are in a dead heat.라고 했고
    NBC 방송기자는 Clinton and Trump are neck and neck.이라고 했다.

    둘 다 똑같이 “힐러리 클린턴와 다날드 트럼프에 대한 유권자 지지도는
    막상막하다”라는 뜻이다.
    dead heat(데드 히이트)는 원래 경마용어로 두 마리 이상의 말이
    동시에 finish line(결승선)에 도착하는 것을 가리킨다.
     neck and neck 역시 경마용어로서 결승점의 줄이 두 말의 목에 동시에 닿는 것을 가리킨다.
    그러므로 둘 다 “동점이다” 또는 “막상막하”란 뜻이다. 

    A: Trump and Clinton are running neck and neck. Who do you think will win?
    B: Hard to tell. They are in a dead heat. 
    A: Who do you want to win?
    B: Donald Trump. What about you?
    A: I want neither of them to be next president of the United States. 
    B: Why?
    A: According to the latest polls, more than half of the American people hate both Clinton and Trump. They want a third choice.
    B: Really? Who do you think the third choice can be?
    A: Bernie Sanders who is still fighting Clinton.
    B: Why Sanders?
    A: Neither Trump nor Clinton beat Sanders in imaginary one-on-one matches.
      Besides. Sanders had been an independent all his political life until last April
      when he joined the Democratic party. So he may bolt the Democratic Party and
      run as an independent candidate in the November general election.
    B: That makes sense.

    A: 트럼프와 클리턴이 막상막하야. 누가 이길 것 같니?
    B: 판단하기 어려워. 막상막하니까.
    A: 넌 누가 당선되기를 바라니?
    B: 다날드 트럼프. 너는?
    A: 난 두 사람 중 누구도 다음 미국대통령이 되는게 싫어.
    B: 왜?
    A: 최근 여론조사를 보면, 미국인의 절반 이상이
      클린턴과 트럼프를 싫어하고 제3의 선택을 원한다구.
    B: 그래? 누가 그 제3의 선택이 될수 있을까?
    A: 아직도 클린턴과 싸우고 있는 버니 쌘더스.
    B: 왜 쌘더스야? 
    A: 트럼프와 힐러리 모두 쌘더스와의 1대1 가상대결에서 졌어.
      게다가 쌘더스는 작년 4월 민주당에 입당하기 전까지는 평생 무소속 정치인이었다구.
      그러니까 민주당을 탈당하고 11월 대선에서 무소속 후보로 뛸수도 있는 거지.
    B: 그거 말 되네.
